Edward A. Scieszinski, 84, of rural Bloomfield, formerly of Albia, died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City. Funeral services were 10:30 a.m., Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Ottumwa, Rev. John Spiegel officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery in Albia, with military rites.

He was born Nov. 28, 1918, in Melrose, to Martin George and Mary Jeanette Kosman Scieszinski. He married Rose O'Brien on Jan. 24, 1950, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Weller. She died Feb. 21, 1962. He served in the U.S. Army for 4 1/2 years, during WWII. He farmed close to Melrose before moving to Albia in 1944 when he began working as a custodian at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Knoxville. He worked at the VA Hospital in Knoxville for 22 years, retiring in 1976. He was also a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, the American Legion, O.B. Nelson Post #3 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post #775, all of Ottumwa. Edward's hobbies included a daily visit to the American Legion and the V.F.W. He also enjoyed shuffleboard, shooting pool, playing cards, dancing and gardening.

He is survived by one son, Bob Scieszinski and his wife Karen of Vancouver, Wash.; four daughters, JoAnn Edwards and her husband Don of Altoona, Beverly Scieszinski of Albia, Donna Long of Des Moines and Chris Crall and her husband Donny of Albia; 16 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one brother, Bernard Scieszinski of Broken Arrow, Okla.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; one grandson, Jason Michael Long; one brother, Louis Scieszinski; and two sisters, Agnes Fuller and Irene Brown.

Memorials may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Juvenile Division. Winfield Funeral Home was in charge of arrangement
