HOWARD LELAND SCHWARTZ Passed away in Oakland on August 20, 2003 at the age of 69 after a long illness. An Alameda County judge for 22 years, Judge Schwartz was born in San Francisco and spent nearly his entire life in Piedmont, where he graduated from Piedmont High School in 1951. He then went on to Stanford University and obtained his bachelor's degree in 1955. After spending two years in the Navy aboard the aircraft carrier Princeton in East Asia, he returned to and graduated from Stanford Law School. In 1960, Judge Schwartz met and married Marion Frances Schwartz and subsequently, the couple had four children. Judge Schwartz began his career in law at the Alameda Count district attorney's office and later was appointed to the Alameda County Municipal Court by President Ronald Reagan, who was then governor. From 1976 to 1980, Judge Schwartz served on the California Commission on Judicial Performance and eventually was elected to the Alameda County Superior Court, where he presided over civil and family court cases for 12 years. Always an active member of the California Judges Association, Judge Schwartz also served on the boards of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Oakland and the Oakland Alameda County Coliseum Foundation. He was an avid fan of the Raiders and Stanford football and a World War II history buff, who collected miniature lead soldiers. When he retired, he enjoyed collecting stamps from the many places that he and his wife, Marion had traveled around the world. A man with great contributions to the field of law, Judge Schwartz will be remembered for his dedication to the field. He is survived by his wife, Marion, his sons, Mike Schwartz of Mill Valley, Bryan Schwartz of Highland Ranch, CO and Douglas Schwartz of Los Angeles, five grandchildren and his niece, Gayle Goodman of New York. he was preceded in death by son, Randy Schwartz. Friends and family are invited to attend funeral services on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. at Temple Sinai, 2808 Summit St. in Oakland. Interment will be at Home of Eternity Cemetery. The family asks that donations be made to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Oakland, 440 Grand Ave., Oakland, CA 94610 or to a charity of your choice.
