Funeral Service: 2:30 P.M. Monday, March 14, 2005 at the St. John Lutheran Church in Beatrice, NE.

Leona A. (Schuster) Jackson, 82 years of age, of Beatrice passed away at her home Thursday morning, March 10, 2005. She was born on January 6, 1923 at Beatrice, NE. and lived in the Beatrice area her entire life. She was raised on a farm near Beatrice, NE., attended rural school, and graduated from Beatrice High School in Beatrice, NE. in 1940. She was a normal trainer and started her teaching career at rural schools in Gage county in 1940. She and Harley M. Jackson were married on August 14, 1943 at Sikeston, MO. She continued teaching part time until 1944 and then full time until she started a family. SHe returned to teaching full time in 1962 teaching in rural schools until 1968 when she received her degree in Elementary Education from the University of Nebraska. She was employed by the Beatrice Public School System at the Paddock Lane Elementary School from 1968 until she retired in 1985. She was a lifelong and very active member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Beatrice, NE. She taught Sunday School for 30 years; taught Bible School; Bethel Bible teacher; charter Stephen Minister Director; Church Council member; WELCA Sarah-Rachel Circle; Alter Guild; Historian; and member of various committees of the church. She was a member of the Alpha Delta Kappa Teacher's Sorority; Beatrice Area Retired Teachers Association; and had also served as a volunteer for various community organizations. Her family was the treasure of her life, and she was an avid reader and sewer. She enjoyed playing bridge, traveling, Big Red and Beatrice Orange athletics.

Survivors include her husband Harley; two daughters, Mary Kathryn Nichols and her husband Roger of Bellevue, NE. and Christine Henrichs and her husband Dennis of Beatrice; 5 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren; brother Erwin Schuster and his wife Lorna of Grand Island, NE.; sisters in law Elva Schuster of Lincoln, NE. and Bernice Schuster of Glenwood, Iowa; brother and sister in law Robert Jackson and his wife Evelyn of Fairbury, NE.; a nephew, nieces and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents Heye and Mary (Carstens) Schuster; and brothers Leonard and Henry Schuster.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 P.M. Monday, March 14, 2005 at the St. John Lutheran Church in Beatrice, NE. with Reverend David Kramer and Reverend Joann Kramer officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen Home in Beatrice, NE. The body will lie in state from 10-9:00 Saturday and Sunday and Monday from 9-12:00 at the Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Beatrice, NE. and at the church one hour preceding the service. A family prayer service will be held at 2:15 P.M. Monday at the church. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to St. John Lutheran Church and the Beatrice Community Hospital Hospice with Rolland and Pauline Decker in charge. Messages of condolence may be sent to [email protected]. They will be forwarded to the family.

Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Beatrice, NE. is in charge of the services.
