Florence E. Caskey, age 80 years, died peacefully at her home in Clintonville on Sunday, March 5, 2006, where her husband and family cared for her after a courageous battle with Parkinson's disease with Lewy body dementia lasting several years.
Florence Elsa Schriefer, was born on May 26, 1925, in Athens, the daughter of the late Martin and Elsa (Becker) Schriefer. She was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church in Athens and attended the Christian Day School there, with confirmation on April 10, 1938. She graduated with honors from Athens High School in 1942, attended Valparaiso University and received her Registered Nurse degree from Milwaukee Pasavant Hospital. Following graduation she worked at that hospital as night nurse supervisor. It was there that she met her husband, Harry S. Caskey, M.D., who she married in Trinity Lutheran Church, Athens, on August 20, 1949. She continued to work at Milwaukee Hospital and later at the Milwaukee Juvenile Detention Center as a nurse. Later, following her husband with their children into the USAF at various bases and overseas in Germany. They returned and settled in Clintonville, where they lived until her death. She worked at the Green Tree Nursing Home, Clintonville, as a nurse and later as a social worker. While there, she was a charter member of the Clintonville Area Alzheimer Support Group. Florence was an active member of St. Martin Lutheran Church, Clintonville, having served on the Board of Stewardship Committee, a member of the Lutheran Women Missionary League and the Valporaiso Guild. She was active in the Girl and Boy Scout organization and served in the American Field Service. She enjoyed playing bridge, traveling, swimming and going to the ski condo with the family. Holidays were always celebrated at her home.
Survivors include her husband, Dr. Harry S. Caskey; two sons, Paul Martin (Joan) Caskey, Spokane, Wash., Mark Thomas (Lilly) Caskey, Bowler; three daughters, Debra Lynn (Thomas) Olson, Marathon, Laurie Beth (Bradd) Zeuske, Shawano, and Kathleen Mary (James) Siegel, Milwaukee; nine grand-children, Erin May, Levi Scott, Eden Marie, Elia Maureen Olson, Sean Mitchell, Mara Kathleen Caskey, Shannon Kaye Caskey, Angela Rose, Isaac James Siegel; her great-grandchild, Caskey Marie Schroeder; her sister, Dorothy (Harold) Punke, Athens; her brother-in-law, John (Stella) Caskey, Phelps; her sister-in-law, Carol (Chester) Caskey, Rhinelander; many nieces, nephews and cousins; special pets were dog Heidi, and cat Midnight.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Elsa Schriefer; and one sister, Helen Minna Schriefer, who died one week after birth.
The Celebration of the Earthly and Eternal Life of Florence Caskey will be held at 11:30 a.m., Friday, March 10, 2006, at the St. Martin Lutheran Church, 100 South Clinton Avenue, Clintonville, with the Rev. David Last presiding. Internment will be in the Graceland Cemetery, Clintonville.
Friends may call at the Eberhardt-Stevenson Funeral Home, Clintonville, on Thursday, March 9, from 4 until 8 p.m. and at the church on Friday, March 10, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society, Lutheran Women Missionary League, or St. Martin Church Pipe Organ Fund.
