Tripoli Farmer: Ewald Louis Schnurstein was born Sept. 21, 1898, at Tripoli, Iowa., the eldest child of Mr. and Mrs. John Schnurstein. On Nov 6 he was baptized by the Rev J. Dilges. His early training in the home was followed up in the public school, Sunday school, religious instruction in the Lutheran faith, followed by confirmation in 1913, and successfully terminated when he was honorably graduated from the Tripoli High School in 1916.
In the home he was obedient , helpful son and loving brother: for his church and its interests his services are cheerfully granted. For two years he was a faithful assistant to the superintendent of the Sunday school. To help beautify the divine services with voice or instrument, Ewald was ever ready. He had been a charter member of our Luther League, whose treasurer he was for several years and at this time was serving as its president. The community had know him and learned to respect him as an industrious, sober and honest young man. He was working with a goal in view. His plans for the future had been duly made. Soon he would enter a Radio School at Milwaukee. However, these plans were not to materialize, for an All guilding Providence saw fit to call him from a promising earthly career to an even more promising course of Life. The messenger to call him hence came, as it were, upon the wings of the present epidemic and claimed his toll after ten days of struggle.
What comfort to be able, as he was, from memory to join his pastor in repeating the beautiful 23rd Psalm, "The Lord is my Shepherd" Later in the day he prepared those attending him for his departure when he said, "This is my last night in Tripoli" and so it proved. Midst the prayers of his loved ones his soul took flight at 3:15 Wednesday am. He was called hence in the prime of his youth, aged 20 year, 2 months, and 20 days. One brother, Arnold had preceded him in death twelve years ago. Today Ewald's seemingly untimely departure is mourned by his devoted parents, three sisters, Valitha, Josephine and Ester, besides a number of other relatives and host of friends.
