PEORIA, IL - Helen S. Davis, 103, of Peoria passed away at 2 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 30, 2012, at Bickford House.
Helen was born July 14, 1908, in Germantown Hills, a daughter of Frank and Gertrude Klein Schmitt. She married James Harold Davis in Peoria on March 10, 1931.
She is survived by two daughters, Lois Norman and Joyce (William) Smith, both of Peoria; 11 grandchildren, Cynthia Manasseh of Peoria, Robert (Lisa) Norman of Colorado, Theresa (Michael) McKee of Plainfield, Ill., Daniel (Lisa) Norman of Cascade, Iowa, Susan (Stan) Hodgson of Tremont, Charles (Terri) Smith of Peoria Heights, James (Diane) Smith of Peoria, Nancy (Bruce) Gage of Indianapolis, Jeanne (David) Wagner of West Chicago, Alan (Judy) Smith of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Patricia (Jeff) Staley of Batavia, Ill.; 29 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Toward the end of her life she required more assistance. She lovingly received it from her caregivers, Norma Behrends, Lila Kirchner, Loni Lange and Cindy Manasseh.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, four brothers, six sisters and one granddaughter.
She was a lifetime member of Caterpillar Retirees and St. Ann's Catholic Church.
Helen attributes her longevity to keeping busy.
During World War II she entered the work force to build machinery needed in the war efforts. She became a Rosie the Riveter, working at Caterpillar Tractor Co. After the war when the men returned, she left Caterpillar, working 25 more years in the bottling department at Hiram Walker before retiring at age 64.
She loved cooking and was known as the salad lady by friends and family, especially known for her poppy seed dressing and homemade noodles.
Helen shared her home with her special friend, Tabby the cat. She always looked forward to family gatherings. Family was the most important part of her life.
Entombment will be in Resurrection Mausoleum.
