Born on March 29, 1920 in Canton and raised in the Collinsville section, Phyllis was the daughter of the late Frank and Jeannette (Johnson) Schmidt. She attended Hillyer Junior College in Hartford, earning an Associate of Science Degree in Business Administration in June of 1941.
Phyllis proudly served her country as a member of the United States Marine Corps during WWII and was honorably discharge in 1945 after two years of service. Prior to her retirement, Phyllis worked in retail as a clothing buyer and as a clerk for the CT Department of Transportation for many years.
She met and married the late Gustave Berglund and together they raised their family in Newington. Phyllis was a member of the Newington Church of Christ Congregational and participated in the Nutmeg Chapter of the Women's Marine Association. She loved to help others and volunteered her time in many ways such as delivering meals on wheels in Newington. She had many friends and loved to meet them for their weekly breakfast club in Newington. She was especially close to her very best friend since elementary school, Grace Diters, whom she called every day at 4PM sharp for many years. Most of all, Phyllis was a devoted grandmother spending countless hours with her grandchildren.
The family would like to say that they greatly appreciate the many cards and letters her friends have continued to send her over the past several years.
Phyllis is survived by her children and their families, MaryJane Hollmann of Vernon and her children, Corey Hollmann and Chelsea Four-Rosenbaum and her husband, Alex; her son, Mark Berglund and his wife, Laureen of No. Kingstown, RI and their children, Collin, Matthew and Alison.
