WELLINGTON Frances Olivia Hill Schmidt, 66, of Wellington died Wednesday, April 25, 2012.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in First United Methodist Church in Wellington with the Rev. Gene
Weinette, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Arlie Cemetery. Arrangements are by Adams Funeral Home of

Frances was born March 18, 1946, to Olivia and L.C. Hill. She grew up in
Wellington, graduating as valedictorian of Wellington High School in 1963. In 1967 she received her bachelor's degree with high honors in mathematics from the University of Texas at Austin, where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta and honor societies Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, and Alpha Lambda Delta. Frances received a Master of Science degree in mathematics from the University of Houston in 1970.

A member of the Man on the Moon Team, Frances was a computer programmer for the Theory and Analysis Group at Lockheed Electronics at NASA.

Frances married Adolf Schmidt in Houston in 1969. They moved to Emden, Germany, where Adolf was the president of his family's company, importing and storing grain in the seaport. Frances taught English as a second language in the Emden Volkshochschule. They had two sons, Britt Oliver Schmidt and Frederic Clinton Schmidt.

The family returned to Texas in 1978 to join Frances' father to farm and run stocker cattle on land settled by Frances' great-grandparents in the 1880s. Frances designed computer programs for small business and was a part-time mathematics instructor for Clarendon College. She was the first woman elected to the Board of Trustees of Wellington Independent Scholl District, first president of the Collingsworth Public Library Board, secretary of the Cal and Ina Sugg Medical Scholarship Foundation Board, and president of the Wellington Ritz Theater, Inc. Board. She was on the Amarillo Symphony Board, served on the Harrington Cancer Center Development Council, the Development Committee for Texas Tech Women's Health Institute. She was honored with the Golden Nail Award presented by the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce and the
Distinguished Service Award presented by the Amarillo Area Women's Forum.

Frances was preceded in death by her son, Frederic; her brother, Creed Hill; and her father, L.C. Hill.

Survivors include her husband, Adolf; a son, Britt and wife Helen; two grandchildren, Mary Helen and David; and her mother, Olivia Hill.

The family suggests memorials be to Frederic Schmidt Memorial Scholarship Fund at Amarillo Area Foundation, 801 S. Fillmore St., Suite 700, Amarillo, TX 79101; or a charity of choice.
