Harry G. Schmidt, 81, of 1912 S. Locust died Thursday at a local hospital.

Services will be Monday at 1:30 p.m. at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. The Rev. F. Hauser Winter will officiate. Burial will be in Grand Island cemetery.

Visitation will be Sunday from 4-9 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Trinity United Methodist Church or the Cancer Fund.

Mr. Schmidt was born July 23, 1898, at Riceville, Iowa, the son of George and Emma Teng Schmidt. When he was young the family moved to the Grand Island area where he went to rural school and grew up.

On April 2, 1919, he married Hazel Kirk in Grand Island. He worked for the Union Pacific Railroad before going to work for Nielson and Petersen Transfer Co. He retired in 1959. Mr. and Mrs. Schmidt also owned and operated Schmidt Grocery store until retirement in 1976.

Mr. Schmidt was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, the Platt-Deutsche Society and Eagles Aerie No. 378.

Survivors include his widow; a daughter, Mrs. Walter (Donna) Peterson of Denver; a son, Gale of Chicago, six grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Norm (Margaret) Strom of Laramie, Wyo.

He was preceded in death by two infant sons and a sister.

I always wondered whatever became of you. I fondly remember buying cokes, candy, and baseball cards from you. So many years ago.
