GOESSEL Frieda Flaming, 88, passed away on Friday (Dec. 2, 2011) at Bethesda Home in Goessel.
She was born on May 6, 1923, in Goessel, the daughter of David L. and Lena (Schmidt) Schmidt. On March 16, 1945, she married Theodore (Ted) B. Flaming at Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church, where they remained lifelong members.
They raised their family on a dairy farm northeast of Goessel and retired to a duplex on the Bethesda campus in 1991. They celebrated 50 years of marriage just prior to Ted's death on April 5, 1995.
Frieda was employed for 25 years as a certified medication aide at Bethesda Home in Goessel. During her retirement, she devoted many hours as a volunteer at Bethesda, helping with feeding, visiting and encouraging residents. Frieda enjoyed music and sang in the church choir and in duets with her husband.
She had a life-long love of animals, and her cats were beloved companions in her last years. She took an active interest in prison ministry and corresponded regularly with several inmates over time.
Frieda is survived by daughter, Dorene Claassen and her husband, Gene of Marlin, Wash.; son, Clyde and his wife, Deborah Gafvert of Wichita; son, Dwight J. Flaming and his wife, Marilyn of Goessel; five grandchildren; one stepgrandchild; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ted B. Flaming; one daughter, Dee Lane Flaming, who died as an infant; her parents, David L. and Lena Schmidt; one brother, Anton Schmidt; and two sisters, Martha Schmidt Reimer and Olga Schmidt Dyck.
Visitation with family present will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Miller-Ott Funeral Home in Goessel. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church Cemetery in rural Goessel. The memorial service will be at 3 p.m. at Alexanderwohl, with Pastors Linda Ewert and Steve Schmidt officiating. A faspa lunch and fellowship will follow the service.
Memorials have been designated for Bethesda Home and may be sent in care of Miller-Ott Funeral Home, 303 E. Main St., P.O. Box 96, Goessel, KS 67053.
