George Schmidt Taken By Death
J. George Schmidt, 68 years of age and a resident of Grand Island for more than 30 years, passed away Sunday at the family residence, 1609 South Locust street, death resulting from a heart ailment which he had suffered for the past eight months,
The departed was born Nov. 29, 1869, in Wittenburg, Germany, and came to America as a young man in 1894. He first settled on a farm in northeastern Iowa and three years later, was united in marriage to Miss Emma Louise Teng, at Riceville, IA.
They came to Nebraska in 1900 and established their home on a farm near St. Libory and, four years later, moved to a farm near Phillips. The came to Grand Island, which since had been the family home, in 1907, and for the past ten years he operated a grocery store adjoining his home. He was a loyal and faithful member of the Sons of Hermann for the past 35 years.
Surviving, besides his widow, are a son, Harry G., of this city; two daughters, Mrs. George Sanders, of Council Bluffs, and Mrs. Harold Krow of Laramie, Wyo.; two sisters, Mrs. George Snyder, of Staples, Minn., and Mrs. Minnie Berbert, of Mulhausen, France; also two grandchildren, Gale and Donna Schmidt.
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 o'clock, Tuesday afternoon, at the Geddes funeral home. Rev. c. B. Harman, pastor of St. Paul's English Lutheran church, will conduct the services and the Sons of Hermann rites will be used at the grave in the Grand Island cemetery.
Friends desiring to view the body may do so between the hours of seven and nine o'clock, Monday evening, at the Geddes funeral home.
