ELMER J. SCHMIDT, 70, ST. JOHN RESIDENT

ST. JOHN, Wash, Rosary recital for Elmer J. Schmidt, a resident of St. John, will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in St. John.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Colfax, with the Revs. Felix Lorge and Eugene Glatt as celebrants. Burial will follow at St. Gall's Cemetery in Colton.

Schmidt died of complications from heart disease Monday at Deaconess Medical Center in Spokane. He was 70.

He was born Dec. 7, 1922, at Uniontown to William and Anna Zellerhoff Schmidt.

He graduated from Colton High School in 1942, and after high school enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Forces.

He flew approximately 30 B-17 missions over Germany as a radio operator during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1945.

He then attended Oregon State College, and later married Eileen Entel April 25, 1946, at Colton.

The couple lived at Portland, Ore., until moving to the Plaza-Rosalia, Wash., area in 1951. They moved to St. John in 1963.

He worked as a Grange insurance agent until retiring in 1987. The couple continued to live at St. John.

He was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Plaza Grange, the 8th Air Force Historical Association, and the 303rd bomb group called the Hells Angels.

He enjoyed gardening and working on his summer home.

Survivors include his wife at the family home in St. John; two sons, William Schmidt of St. John and Eugene Schmidt of Mattawa, Wash.; four daughters, Teresa Simek of Gig Harbor, Wash., LaVonne Crun of Hoquiam, Wash., Arlene Schmidt of Pullman and Joanne Hartman of Issaquah, Wash.; four sisters, Laura Myers of Spokane, Mary Steagall of Seattle, Agnes Ludwig of Groveland, Calif., and Peggy Ray of Uniontown; four brothers, William Schmidt and Leroy Schmidt, both of Spokane, Leo Schmidt of Asotin and Larry Schmidt of Vancouver, Wash.; and 10 grandchildren.

A brother, James, a daughter, Sandra, and a grandson died previously.

The family suggests memorials be given to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church at St. John or the Country Cuzzins Garden Club at St. John.

Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax is handling the arrangements.
