LANCASTER: David Lee Schmeltzer, 73, of Lancaster, Ohio, passed away peacefully with his family at his side on Monday, March 31, 2014 at the Cleveland Clinic.

He was born June 2, 1940 in Bremen, Ohio to Bernard Francis and Cecilia (Kunkler) Schmeltzer.

David lived his life to the fullest in Ohio enjoying his loving wife Barbara, his family and especially his grandchildren. Dave enjoyed being outdoors whether it was gardening, cutting wood or enjoying nature. He had a talent for fixing what was broken and building the impossible around the house, in the wood shop, or in Tom's garage. He retired after 28 years with Fairfield County Bridge Department building and rebuilding bridges. Dave kept his passion alive through building model replicas of Fairfield County covered bridges that are on display for future generation to enjoy. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus council 1016.

His life has been and will continue to be celebrated by his family and friends including his wife of 48 years, Barbara; his daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren, Lisa and Bruce Kendrick, Alyssa and David of Stow, Ohio; his son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren Matthew and Mialee, Luke, Katherine, Caroline and Ava; his brother, Robert Schmeltzer of Bremen, Ohio; sisters and brothers-in-law, Shirley (Bill) Harwood of Logan, Ohio, Diane Schmeltzer of Logan, Mary (Pat) Green of Somerset, Ohio, Kathleen (Jack) Shonk of Somerset, Hilda Wagner of Pleasantvile, Ohio, Fran (Dave) Woofter of New Lexington, Ohio; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother; brother, Earl; brother-in-law, Ed Wagner; sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Schmeltzer.

Family wil receive friends on Friday April 4, 2014 from 2:00 to 8:00 P.M. at SHERIDAN FUNERAL HOME, 22 South Columbus Street, Lancaster, Ohio. Vigil service will be 8:00 P.M. Friday.

A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be !0:00 A.M. Saturday, April 5, 2014 St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church with Fr. Paul Nobel a Celebrant and Fr. Craig Eilerman as Co-Celebrnt. Burial will follow at St. Mary Cemetery.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all of their friends for cards, prayers and support during Dave's courageous fight and a special thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff at the Cleveland Clinic's Leuemia, Bone Marrow Transplant and Intensive Care Units. They are truly a credit to their profession.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Dave's name to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
