FOLKS, CARRIE JOE SCHLEMMER, 83
Dunnellon, Florida - The Gator Nation has lost one of it's most loyal supporters.
Since childhood, back when the University of Florida was still an all boys school, Carrie Joe Schlemmer Folks was in attendance at the Florida football games.
Eighty years late, she still managed the long walks and large crowds to cheer her beloved Gators on to vitory.
Football was not the only sport Carrie Joe enjoyed.
Baseball, basketball, tennis or golf, all that mattered to Carrie Joe was that she was playing or watching a sport.
She was truly an athlete at heart.
Sports, however, were not her only love.
Born in cedar Key, Florida in 1924, Carrie Joe grew up with a love for the coastal town that boats fresh seafood and small town living.
"Granny always talked about riding the large sea turtles down on the dock as a child," said Sarah Joe Thomas, Carrie Joe's granddaughter and namesake.
In her high school years, her family moved to Inverness, Florida where her father was relocated because of his job.
It was at Citrus High School that Carrie Joe met the love of her life, Ned H. Folks, who was recruited to Citrus High from Dunnellon to play football.
One month after graduation in 1942, the couple eloped right before Ned was to leave for his stationing with the Coast Guard in Maryland.
Even a war could not keep Carrie Joe away from her new husband. Soon after Ned was sent to Baltimore, Carrie Joe wrote a letter informing him that she was coming to be with him. Not knowing if he had even received her letter, she struck out on the next train and thankfully he was there to meet her when she arrived.
After the couple's service with the military ended, the Folks' were back to Ned's family farm in Dunnellon where they would call home.
Five children and sixty years later, the couple still enjoyed dancing with one another to the sounds from the big band era.
Carrie Joe Folks went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 24, 2008.
Her loving husband, Ned, two children, Sarah Katherine and Ned H. Folks, Jr. and her great-granddaughter, Lila Rae Tyre preceded her in death.
She is survived by her brother, August (Bucky) Schlemmer; sister, Lily Mena Clack; daughters, Linda Folks, Sarah Cannon and Susan Cannon; sons-in-law, Ronnie Cannon and Perry Cannon; her seven grandkids; and seven great-grandkids.
She was a woman greatly revered by her freinds and family for her faith in God, zest for life and loving spirit.
She will be greatly missed.
The family will receive friends from 5-8 PM, Thursday, June 26, 2008 at ROBERTS FUNERAL HOME in Dunnellon, Florida.
Funeral services will be held Friday, June 27th, 2008 at 10:00 AMat the First Baptist Church of Dunnellon with the Reverend Russell Randall and Dr. Bob Brooks officiating.
