John F. Scherer, 89, New Smyrna Beach, Union Leader of AFL-CIO at Dana Corp., Reading, PA before his retirement, died January 4, 2015.

Mr. Scherer, a U. S. Army veteran of World War II in the 508th 82nd Airborne, was born in Ashland, PA and moved to the area in 1979 from Laureldale, PA. He was a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church and the American Legion Post #17, both in New Smyrna Beach; Elks Lodge #1557, Edgewater; VFW Post #3282, Am Vets and 508th 82nd Airborne Division all in Port Orange, and the DAV Post in Holly Hill. John was the founder and member of the Peace of Mind Group with Alcoholics Anonymous, New Smyrna Beach.

Survivors include his loving wife of 32 years, Joy; one son, John Boy (Mary) Petteys of Brunswick, GA; one daughter, Theresa M. (Jim) Furber and their dog Pidi of Jeffersonville, IN; dear friend for 16 years, Linda Kellum of New Smyrna Beach and friend and sponsor for 20 years, Timothy Linehan of Longwood.

Cremation was by Dudley Crematory, New Smyrna Beach. Mass of Christian Burial will be 1 PM Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, New Smyrna Beach. Cremains burial will follow in Edgewater-New Smyrna Cemetery, Edgewater with military honors being conducted by members of American Legion Post #285, Edgewater.
