Capt. Clark H. Scherer Jr., USN Ret, 81. From building roads and air fields in Vietnam as a Sea Bee to bringing the name of Scherer Construction to Florida, Mr. Scherer was a contractor and developer, a boater, a three meter diver, a husband, a father, a grandfather, an officer and a gentleman.
After his initial prognosis only giving him eight weeks to live, he valiantly battled MDS/leukemia for over a year and a half.
Born son of Clark H. Scherer and Sammie Mount, raised in Louisville, KY, he was graduated of Male High School and the University Of Louisville Speed Engineering School, receiving a Masters in Civil Engineering.
While at U of L, he was on the first swim and dive team, a champion of the three meter dive, and a yell leader for the cheerleading squad.
He is survived by five sons: Clark III, William Kevin, David, J. Chris, Craig: grandchildren David Matthew, Christina (Brendon) Bock, Sarah Ann, David Keith, Lacy, John Christoper "J.C" and Jocelyn; his second wife Donalie Young Fitzgerald, stepchildren Lauralee (Peter) Stewart, Valerie, John Scott and Kellie Fitzgerald.
He was predeceased by his first wife Laverne Midgett Scherer and infant son Mark.
Mr. Scherer was mayor of Coconut Creek, Florida from 1972-1976. He was past president of the University of Louisville Tampa Bay Alumni Club, member Golden Alumni Society and a National Alumnus, as well as the CEO of the Scherer Group and a licensed engineer in Florida, Kentucky, Texas, California and Louisiana.
The viewing will be held at Anderson McQueen Funeral Home, 2201 9th Street North, St. Petersburg, FL on Wednesday, September 12th from 5:00pm to 7:00pm.
The Memorial Service will be held at Pasadena Community Church, 227 70th Street South, St. Petersburg, FL at 11:00am on Thursday, September 13th.
