Elsie Bloom Scharf (age 90) passed away peacefully November 19, 2010. Born in Brooklyn on November 4, 1920 to Harry and Celia (Turgel) Bloom, Elsie was the youngest of four sisters plus a younger brother who were steeped in Yiddishkeit. At 21, she met Larry Scharf, who, she reported, would keep her laughing her whole life. They wed in 1944 and she joined him in New Orleans where he was stationed before shipping out to Saipan. In 1946, they moved to Los Angeles to join his family business LeRoy Knitwear.
Elsie was a great hostess and made wonderful shabbat dinners, holidays, bbqs and swimming parties. She loved music and pre-concert picnics at the Hollywood Bowl.
She believed in activism and energetically supported Na'amat, AICF, Israel Bonds, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, American Youth Symphony, and other charities and political causes.
Over the last eleven years, as she suffered from Alzheimers, she was cared for by her beloved husband Larry until his passing seven months ago.
She is survived by her devoted family: son Steven (Janet), daughters Andrea (Ken Krug), Harriet (Bart Sokolow), six grandchildren Adina (Ilya) Reyter, Sari (Ron) Rappaport, Sharona Solokow, Aliza Sokolow, Joshua Krug and Simone Krug, and three great-grandchildren (Rimona, Simon and Liel).
Service was held Monday. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Na'amat USA at www.naamat.org
