Services for Elton O. "Peck" Shaefer, former city clerk in Staunton, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Williamson Funeral Home there with the Rev. Leslie J. Mitkos officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home. The family suggests memorials be directed to the Zion Stained Glass Window Fund or to Shriners Hospital. Mr. Shaefer died at 5:15 p.m. Sunday, July 25, 1999, in Staunton Memorial Hospital. He was 81 years old on July 20. He served as Staunton city clerk from June 1, 1972, to May 11, 1981. He also worked as an operating engineer for 30 years at Shell Oil Company in Wood River. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Staunton and editor of the Panhorst Street Bocci Ball Club newspaper column. He was born in Staunton, a son of Otto and Della Fritz Schaefer. He married Marcella Wall on October 20, 1942, in Staunton. She survives. Surviving also is a son, Jan Schaefer of Gillespie, daughter in law, Sharon Schaefer of Staunton, and five grandchildren, Jeffrey and Kevin Schaefer of Staunton, Janeen, Danelle, and Kirsta Schaefer of Gillespie. Preceding her in death were a son, Ronald Schaefer, and a sister in infancy.
