Born in Red Wing,Minnesota, Norman Joseph was the second of twelve children of Valentine George and Caroline Elisabeth Jordan Schaaf. When he was a young boy, the family moved to Murdock, Mn. Norman "eloped" with Alfrieda Charlotte Anna Elizabeth Kirschstein in her home town of Chicago, IL; priest A. A. Trainor married them in the rectory of St. Sylvester Church on Humboldt Ave in Chicago on Sept. 15 1917. They had taken out their marriage license the day before. Their first child Edith Charlotte was born a year later (Sept. 1, 1918), a month before her father enlisted in the army as a private on Oct. 3, 1918. World War I ended a month later, and Norman was discharged on Jan. 10 1919. The couple had three more children, Norman David (1921-1997), Gloria Ann (1926-2014) and Shirley Marie (1928-2015).
For most of his adult life, Norman was a policeman for the City of Minneapolis, MN, rising from the level of Sergeant to that of Chief of Police and serving some time as a detective, as well. On 19 August, 1942, he enlisted (at age 47) in the U. S. Navy Sea-bees for service during World War II. He served three years, mostly in in the Philippines, for this Construction Batallion (CB) and was released from service on 17 Aug. 1945. His son Norman served in the Navy throughout the War.
Norman Joseph Schaaf is buried in Fort Snelling National cemetery, Plot T, 1579. His wife Alfrieda's ashes are interred above her husband's casket in the same plot. Both their names are on the headstone.
