Famous cat. In 1996, the "Scarlett Award for Animal Heroism" was created in her honor.
Scarlett began her story in an abandoned garage in New York, where she took care for her five kittens, who were about 4 weeks old.

March 30, 1996 a big fire broke out in the garage. Firefighters arrived and noticed a homeless cat that was coming back again and again to rescue her newborn kittens.

The cat had burnt paws, ears, face and scorched eyes because of the fire, but only after she pulled the last kitten out of the fire, and then lost consciousness.

The cat and her kittens were taken immediately to a local veterinary hospital. It took three months for "Scarlett" to recover (her name was given by the League for Animal Welfare). She would require medical care for the rest of her life due to her burns, and one of her kittens died a month later.

The story of this brave cat spread quickly. Mother's Day cards were sent to and there were over 7,000 applications sent in by people hoping to adopt Scarlett.

The four kittens found homs with 2 families in Long Island, New York and Scarlett was adopted by Karen Wellen. Her application stated that her cat had died in a car accident and now she would like to spend her time and energy taking care of Scarlett. Scarlett lived with Karen for more than 10 years. At the end of life Scarlett suffered from various illnesses kidney failure, heart murmur, lymphoma and other ailments.
The verdict was returned saying that there is no hope for her recovery, so at the age of 13, Scarlett was put to sleep while lying in her owners hands. Her medical care had been provided and paid for all of her life by her doctors
Scarlett died on October 11, 2008.

League established the "Scarlett Award for Animal Heroism", awarded to animals who rescue other animals or humans.

Scarlett's act of bravery told in a book by Jane Martin and JC Suarez called "Scarlett Saves Her Family".

Scarlett's life has been portrayed as a hero in many books and movies. Since 1996, the "Scarlett Award for Animal Heroism" her been given in her honor.
