Ray E. and Marguerite Scarborough Baker. The Bakers were happily married for 68 years. Marguerite died peacefully on Thursday, May 19 at Methodist University Hospital. Ray died Tuesday, May 24 while in hospice care at Methodist University Hospital. Both were born in Memphis. They married 2 weeks before Ray reported for basic training in San Diego with the US Navy in 1942. He spent the next four years in the Pacific Arena on the USS Whitney, a destroyer tender where he was a Metal Plating Specialist. Ray was an avid antique car collector, bonsai enthusiast, and private pilot. He loved anything that had wires, or used electricity and he was never without a hobby. He started a successful plumbing business in 1958- Ray E. Baker Heating and Plumbing and retired in 1986. Marguerite collected coins and stamps and was a lifelong reader with a special love of mysteries. She enjoyed playing bridge, and had just completed a college algebra course on line for FUN. Marguerite was devoted to her family. Both Ray and Marguerite were active in the Spring Lake Neighborhood Association and the Church of The Nativity. Ray was preceded in death by his mother, Lena Luck Baker, his stepfather, Martin Baker, his Grandmother, Ida Mae Luck, and his brother Richard Thomas Baker. Marguerite was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Helen Sullivan Scarborough, and her brother Edward Joseph Scarborough. She is survived by her brother, Harry Inge Scarborough. Ray and Marguerite are survived by their five children - Stephen Ray Baker, Julia Baker Bell (Claude), Timothy Ray Baker (Sharron), Brother Christopher Ray Baker, and Laura Baker-Haddock (Mark), 7 grandchildren; Suzanne, Mark (Etheldreda) Jenny, Jordan (Shelby), Madeleine, Ethan, and Rosemary, and 3 great grandchildren. Visitation will be at 9:30 Friday, May 27 at the Church of the Nativity with mass following at 11 a.m. There will be a private burial at West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery at a later date. The family requests any memorials be sent to the Poor Clares, the Salvation Army or a charity of the donor's choice.
