The funeral for America Brown Scales, 96, of 31211Jeb Stuart Highway, Spencer, will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Mayo Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. Dwight Mack will officiate, and burial will be in the Thomas family cemetery in Stella.


Scales died June 14, 2012, at Moses Cone Select Specialty Hospital in Greensboro, N.C.

She was born March 5, 1916, in Henry County to John B. Brown and Mary Frances Whitehead. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Love Scales; two sons, James Cornelius Johnson and Harold William Scales; and three sisters, Lucy Manns, Dorothy Martin and Jesse Brown.

She worked as a packer for Bassett-Walker for 12 years. She was a member of Mayo Missionary Baptist Church, and was its oldest member at the time of her death.

Surviving are three daughters, Frances Marie Penn of Martinsville, Eller Goldie Johnson of Spencer and Margaret Reynolds; three sons, Lee Roy Johnson of Martinsville, James Junior Scales of Spencer and Ramey R. Scales of Axton; 35 grandchildren; 65 great-grandchildren; and 39 great-great-grandchildren.

Hairston Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
