THE HENRY BULLETIN, Feb. 4, 1916, p. 4, col. 5 [edited]. Winston-Salem, N.C. Jan. 25, 1916. Maj. James S. Scales passed away Saturday night at the home of Mr. H. H.Riddie, on Spring Street, where he had resided. Interment was in the family burial ground near Sandy River, Stokes County. Mr. Scales was born in Henry County, Va. on June 19, 1840. He was the son of Mr. John Pinkney Scales and Mrs. Judith H. Scales (nee. Miss Judith Shelton). He moved to Madison, N.C. in 1872 and remained there until 1875, when he moved to Winston-Salem, N.C. He served in the Civil War and was at the surrender at Appommattox. He is survived by two sisters, Sue and Sarah Scales, two brothers, Messrs. P. N. and Joe Scales, a nephew, Mr. W. A. Shelton, who is Marshal of the Southern District of Missouri, and a great-niece, Mrs. Harper Stephens of Temple, Texas.
