LEBANON, Va. – Mrs. Cleo Mae Alexander, age 80, departed this earthly life for a wonderful life in her eternal home on Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2007.
We let go from this earthly home our best friend, loving wife, sweetest sister, dearest sister-in-law and loving aunt to enter into her heavenly home. We will miss you but God needs you now.
Cleo's journey began on Aug. 18, 1927. She married James (Babe) Alexander on May 10, 1947. Their union was blessed for over 60 years. She served Lebanon Chapel AME Zion Church all of her life. At the time of her illness, she was a trustee, member of the Stewardess Board, the missionary president, a deaconess, church custodian, Sunday school secretary, president of the Home & Overseas Mission and life member of the missionary, upgraded June 2007 to life matron of the missionary. In the past, she served as superintendent of the Buds of Promise and church secretary.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter Scales and Pearl Martin Scales; her brothers, Walter, Clarence, Harry, William, John, James and Charles; and a sister, Girlie Rosetta.
Left to cherish her memories are her loving husband, James (Babe) Alexander, Lebanon; three loving brothers, Ralph and wife Jayne Scales, Portsmouth, Va., Jack Scales of Maryland, Va., and Thomas and wife Rebecca Scales, Lebanon; a loving sister, Charlotte and husband Dennis Felton, Suffolk, Va.; loving sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; loving nieces, nephews and cousins; and best of friends.
The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, 2007, in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel, with the Rev. Justina Young, the Rev. Jacqueline Booher, Dr. James Belcher and the Rev. Emmanuel Mabry officiating. Burial will follow in Ketron Memorial Gardens.
Nephews and friends will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Spencer Foster, James Hicks and James P. Robinson.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home and at the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Lebanon, where a meal will be served and a time of fellowship for family and friends following the service.
