Willie Virginia Scales Balsley, 94, passed away at Forsyth Medical Center in the afternoon of Sunday, Nov. 16, 2003.
She was born in Leaksville, now Eden, N.C. on March 20, 1909, the second of seven daughters born to Arthur William Scales and Rowena Matthews Scales.
Her early education began in Leaksville and continued in Winston-Salem with a diploma from Columbian Heights High School. She entered Winston-Salem Teachers College, now Winston-Salem State University, where she earned a degree in elementary education and began the career path that lasted until her retirement from the New York City public schools in 1973.
Upon marriage to Ernest Balsley she resumed permanent residence in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Mrs. Balsley was active in several organizations, including The Sigma Shadows (Wives' Club of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity), the WSSU Columbian Heights Alumni Chapter and Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc., the Alpha Mu Sigma chapter of which she helped found in 1943. She was an energetic and devout member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, participating with the United Methodist Women, the Adult Women Sunday School Class and the Offering Stewardesses.
Mrs. Balsley was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; four sisters, Edna Scales Robinson, Rowena Scales Webb, Mabel Scales Hairston and Ophelia Scales Cohen; and two nephews, Alfred Fowlkes and Dennis Webb.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, in St. Paul United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Donald Jenkins officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the church foyer 30 minutes prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul United Methodist Church Building Fund.
