The Otsego Farmer
Mrs. Frances L. Saxton
On Monday, September 8, 1924, occurred the death at No. 7 High Street, Albany, of Frances Louise Newell, widow of John Lavern Saxton of Otsego county, who died in Westville in 1874. Mrs. Saxton was born in Laurens in 1834 but removed with her parents, John F. and Harriet (Hecox) Newell, to Milford at an early date and resided there or in the vicinity for nearly fifty years. The funeral services were held on Thursday, September 11th, at the M.E. Church in Slingerlands, Albany County, where she resided from 1911 to 1918 and of which church she was a member at the time of her death, having been a member of the M.E. church nearly all her life and a Sunday School teacher in Milford and other places where she resided, for many years.
Mrs. Saxton was a woman of keen and active mind, descended in all lines from old New England families. In the Newel line she was descended from Abraham Newell who was born in England in 1581 and came to Massachusetts Bay about 1634. In this line was Samuel newell, an early missionary who, with his wife Harriet (Atwood) Newell, went out to India with Adoniram Judson and died in Bombay in 1821.
The bearers, personal friends of the deceased's son, were, Marshall M. France, James A. Davidson, Ralph E. Thompson and Frank C. Agnew. Relatives present from out of town were William R. Saxton of Oneonta, brother-in-law, mrs. Alida Saxton, sister-in-law of Albany, and her daughter miss Lula Saxton; three nieces, Mrs. Jane (Snyder) Green of Westville, Mrs. Grace (Gano) Jewell and Mrs. Della (Saxton) Woodcock of Milford; and three grand-nieces, Mrs. Genevieve (Newell) Lechevet of Oneonta and the misses Marletta and Mary Newell of Cooperstown.
The deceased is survived by her only child, Harold N. Saxton, of Albany and one grandson and a granddaughter. There are also many relatives in Cooperstown, Milford and Laurens.
