Stephen Walter Sauls Sr., 53, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2008. He was born Oct. 31, 1954, in Tallahassee, Fla. Walter and Debi married while living in Atlanta and moved to St. Augustine in 2001. Walter is survived by his wife, Debi; mother Bea Sauls of Tallahassee; four children, Stephen Sauls (Celeste) of Atlanta, Laura Terry (Randy) of Cullowhee, N.C., Kristin Crawford of Atlanta and Airman 1st Class Chase Crawford of St. Augustine; two grandchildren, Claire and Madelyn; brothers Jim Sauls (Lynn) of Tallahassee, Leonard Sauls (Esther) of Jacksonville, and Bob Sauls (Nancy) of Tallahassee; nephew Jimmy; and nieces Jackie and Marianne; all are of Tallahassee. His mother, Martha Tate Sauls, and his father, James Jefferson Sauls Sr., preceded him in death. Walter graduated from Godby High School in Tallahassee. He held a bachelor's degree from Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Fla., and a master's degree from the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. He loved the water and was a captain in the U.S. Merchant Marine. Walter was a volunteer coach and Web master for St. Augustine High School football, a member of Anastasia Baptist Church and was active in community service in St. Augustine. He was a volunteer for Community Hospice of Northeast Florida. A gathering for family and friends will be from 6 to 8 p.m. EDT today, Oct. 29., at Craig Funeral Home (904-824-1672) in St. Augustine, Fla. A celebration of his life will be at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, at Anastasia Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that donations be made to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida or St. Augustine Youth Services. Craig Funeral Home Crematory Memorial Park is in charge of arrangements.
