WILLISTON - Rita Skaidrite Ilga Saule (born Skaidrite Skuja), 91, passed away peacefully on the evening of May 19, 2011, in Fletcher Allen Health Care, surrounded by her loving family.
Rita was born on Jan. 2, 1920, in St. Petersburg, Russia, to Latvian parents, Edvards and Anna- Aleksandra Skuja.
She was raised in Riga, Latvia, where she attended the Latvian Academy of Art and studied painting and fiber arts. Upon the Soviet occupation of Latvia in 1944, Rita and her mother fled to Germany and for the next five years resided in various displaced persons camps. While in Germany, she worked for the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration as a graphic designer and illustrator. In 1949, Rita emigrated from Germany to the United States and established herself as a professional artist, avid gardener, and active member of the Latvian-American community in Cleveland, Ohio.
She married Arthur Vilis Saule in 1951, with whom she shared her life until his death in 2001.
Since 1997, Rita has been living with her daughter and family in Williston.
Rita is survived by her daughter, Mara; son, Peter of Olathe, Kan.; and their families, son-in-law, Dan Archdeacon and grandsons, Talis and Nicholas Archdeacon; and, daughterin-law, Michele Jereb Saule and grandsons, Christopher and Aaron Saule. She is also remembered by an extended family in Riga, Latvia.
Memorial services and interment will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 4, 2011, at Sunset Memorial Park, North Olmsted, Ohio.
Arrangements are entrusted to Corbin & Palmer in Burlington, and Dostal Funeral Services in Ohio.
