GALESBURG - Doris H. Gale, age 94, of Galesburg, formerly of Dahinda, died at 2:35 p.m. Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at Hawthorne Inn in Galesburg.
She was born May 10, 1914 (the first official Mother's Day) in Dahinda, the daughter of Alvin E. and Helen Nelson Sargeant.
She married Max E. Gale on Sept. 21, 1934, in Auburn, Ind., while attending the 50th anniversary of Max's grandparents. He preceded her in death July 24, 1981.
Surviving are sons Bradley (Sandy) Gale of Friendswood, Texas, and Brent (Kim) Gale of West Linn, Ore.; daughter Brenda (David) Bliss of rural Maquon; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, including Jean Burgin of Dahinda and Ann Hulin of Williamsfield; great-nieces who assisted with her care during the latter part of her life, Patty Burgin of Dahinda and Becky Burgin of Dahinda; and sister-in-law Betty Gale of Williamsfield. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one brother, Royce Sargeant; and many friends from the Dahinda area.
Doris lived most of her life in the Dahinda area and attended Dahinda Grade School. When it came time for high school, she chose to attend Galesburg High School and would travel to Galesburg aboard the 'Doodlebug' train Monday morning and board with various people during the week and return to Dahinda by train Friday afternoon. She graduated from Galesburg High School in 1933.
Doris was very active in community and county organizations. She was the oldest member of Dahinda United Methodist Church, where she served on the church board and the women's church committee for many years. She was well known for her homemade chicken and noodles and fruit pies that were served at many church functions and suppers. For 40 years she touched the lives of many of the youth of Dahinda area as their 4-H leader. Doris volunteered at the Red Cross Bloodmobile in the Galesburg area. She helped organize the Knox County Scenic Drive and served on the county committee for many years. She was a 70-year-plus member of the Knox County Home Bureau, later known as the Knox County Homemaker's Extension and now known as Knox County Homemaker Education Association, and a member of the Knox County Farm Bureau.
Doris enjoyed sewing and gardening, both vegetable and flower gardening and offered produce from both gardens to many people of the community. In the year 2000, due to declining health, Doris moved to Seminary Estates in Galesburg and later moved to Hawthorne Inn.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 8, at Dahinda United Methodist Church, with Rev. Randy Douglass officiating. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, March 7, at Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home and Crematory in Knoxville. Burial will be in Williamsfield Cemetery.
