Maurine Avinger, 93, a lifelong resident of Sulphur Springs until 2 ½ years ago, passed away in Walnut Creek, CA, on Wednesday, Feb. 23. The former Melba Maurine Sapaugh was born on July 2, 1917 in Hopkins County. She was the daughter of William Victor Sapaugh and Lilah Jane Prim. She graduated from Sulphur Springs High School and attended East Texas State Teacher's College. In July, 1943 she married Joe Dan Avinger in Sulphur Springs. Mrs. Avinger was an active member of the First Baptist Church most of her life. In her free time, she liked to play bridge, read, and cook. She served as president of the Junior Waverly Club as well as the Lena Day Garden Club. Her love of gardening was evident when at one point she had over 300 African violets in her home.
She loved her Texas sports teams. When she moved to San Ramon, CA in 2008, she purchased special sports packages for her TV so that she could see all the games for her beloved Cowboys, Rangers, and Mavericks.
Maurine will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Lilah and Paul Newton of Danville, CA, grandsons and their wives, Michael and Jill Newton of San Ramon, CA, David and Monica Newton of Dublin, CA, and two great granddaughters, Taylor and Emma Newton of San Ramon, CA.
She was preceded in death by her three brothers, T. T. (Cowboy) Sapaugh, Marvin Sapaugh, and Howard Sapaugh, and her sister, Polly Hall.
