Timothy Sanford is my third great grandfather. He was born on 22 Jan 1761 and died Jan 22, 1841. Some researchers have him born in Staffordshire, England but in the 1880 census, Joel lists both his father mother as being born in Connecticut. (Census records are notoriously erroneous)More than one Timothy Sanford was found in Connecticut, but the ages do not agree with what is known about ‘our' Timothy

His father was probably R. Sanford born in Staffordshire, England. Oral history has Timothy as a "Duke" in England. There is some question about this.

Timothy's first wife (who's last name is believed to have been Hubbard) died during the birth of John. Timothy then married Rhoda W. Noreback on 03 Jan 1796. She was born in 1776 and died 8 Sep, 1837.

That might also explain the "oral family history" that says Rhoda was sent back to England to have Joel. If John's mother died due to childbirth, likely with no attending doctor etc., it would seem possible for Timothy to have sent his second wife and mother-to-be to where good doctors would be nearby (so oral tradition goes). Joel and his mother returned to the US when he was an infant.

They were the parents of the following children:
1. Rhoda Sanford, died 08 Sep 1837
2. John N. Sanford, born 16 Sep 1798, d. 17 May 1825.
3. Joel L. Sanford, born 21 Nov 1799 He died 05 Apr 1888
in Lamoine Twp., McDonough Co., Illinois
4. Lucy Ann Sanford, born 11 Jan 1802
5. Ransford D. Sanford, born 16 Nov 1809
6. Daniel C. Sanford was born 07 May 1812 and died May 24, 1883 "Age 71 Yrs"(37) His wife's name was Eliza and she died 13 April, 1875. They were the parents of at least one child: Clarence H. Sanford, born 16 Feb, 1853, and died 28 Sep, 1854, "1 Yr, 7 Mo, 12 Days)
Daniel, Eliza and Clarence are all buried in the Sterling Center Cemetery, Cayuga Co, New York.
