Simon Ray Sands served in both World War I and World War II. He began his career with the U. S. Life Saving Service as a surfman on Block Island, RI. His rank upon retirement was Lt. Cmdr and his position prior to his first retirement was as Commander of the First Coast Guard District headquartered in New Jersey. He retired with his wife to Apponaug, RI but then reentered the service when WW II came along and was stationed in New York City. He finally retired to Providence. He died in Dec 1950.
