Birth: Apr., 1827
Randolph County
North Carolina, USA
Death: Apr. 6, 1919
Jackson County
Alabama, USA

Scottsboro Citizen, 8 Apr 1919:

Death At Kyles
Mr. Mash Sanders aged 98 years passed away at his home
near Kyles Saturday and was buried Sunday.Mr. Sanders was a highly respected man in his community and had spent the majority of his life in this county.

Scottsboro Citizen, 15 Apr 1919:[from "Mud Creek News" column]"Uncle" Mash Sanders, one of the oldest citizens of the county passed to his home in eternity Saturday night. He had for some time been suffering with paralysis. He leaves three children and
a host of grand and great grandchildren.Travelers from Winchester to North Alabama will long remember "Uncle" Mashes hospitality."

It is believed that "Uncle Mash," is buried in an unmarked grave at the Sanders Mill Creek Cemetery near Skyline.

The year of his birth is not certain. Alfred appears on the 1850 census as 22 years old and on the 1860 census as 33 years old, indicating he was born in 1827-28. He appears on the 1880 census (first name nearly illegible, appears to be Alford or Abford) as 54 years old, indicating he was born in 1826.He appears on the 1900 census as 71 years old.He appears on the 1880 census as a basketmaker with wife Catherine and son James and daughter Evaline, 23 and 13 years old respectively. Alfred Head Mash Sanders appears on the 1910 Jackson County census as 81 years old. His occupation is listed as basketmaker then also.

The 1850 census lists Alfred as 22 years old, Catherine as 27 years old, and Lucinda as 2 years old.

The 1860 cenus lists Alfred as 33 years old, Catherine as 34 years old, Lucinda as 12 years old, Benjamin as 10 years old, and James as four years old.

His name is illegible on the 1870 census but his wife and children are listed after him.

In an affidavit signed on February 4, 1897 in support of the pension application of Gillie Sanders, widow of his brother John, Afred stated he was 70 years old. Therefore, my guess is that the birth year of 1826-27 is correct, and he was probably born in April 1826 or April 1827. His mother would have been about 44-45 years old at that time.

His death certificate is the only record that gives the middle name Mashburn and that is the only given name listed. The death certificate lists him as age 98, indicating a birth year of 1821, but that is probably an exaggeration. He was, however, the last surviving child of his parents, Benjamin and Mary Sanders.
