Bennie "Ben" Kenneth Sanders, Jr., resident of Kaw City, passed away Wednesday, March 30, 2011, at his home. He was 74. The graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, April 4, 2011 at the Odd Fellows Cemetery with Chaplain Tom Howard, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Trout Funeral Home & Crematory. Ben was born on November 27, 1936 to Bennie Kenneth Sanders, Sr. and Evelyn (Kuxhaus) Sanders in Ponca City, OK. After graduating High School in Ponca City he joined the Navy and was assigned to the aircraft carrier CV-31 USS Bonhomme Richard. Ben completed his enlistment in the Navy running the radar system, and then attended Oklahoma University where he received a Bachelor of Science in Biology. He went on to complete his Masters in Education at Oklahoma State. For 37 years Ben was a teacher and an administrator in the public school system of Oklahoma. He had many hobbies including spending his time on the "Salty Dawg" sailing in regattas all over the country. He built his first sailboat by hand in the 1960's. Other than sailing, some of his favorite pastimes were working with computers, spending time watching OU football, reading from some of his favorite authors, remote control sailboats and sketching his art. He took up drawing in his later years, and several of his art pieces have been sold all over the world. He was a proud father, grandfather, and great grandfather. His friends had nicknames for him such as Ben Jamin and SaltD. He is survived by his three children: Todd Sanders and his wife Brenda of Ponca City, Joy Dunn and her husband Doug of Tulsa, and Ken Campbell Sanders of Dell City, His Grandchildren include Hope Sanders of Ponca City, Cara Dunn, of Ponca City, Doug Dunn, Jr, of Ponca City, Tatum Dunn, of Tulsa, Sheridan Dunn, of Tulsa, and Dawson Dunn, of Tulsa. He also has 3 great-grandchildren Layton, Landon and Sheldon of Ponca City; one sister, Terrie Martin, of Loveland, Co. He is preceded in death by his parents and one sister. Honorary casket bearers will be: Ron Folks, Ron Mays, and Michael Curby Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 841125, Dallas, TX 75284.
