Laverne Sanders, 90, was born March 9, 1920 in Mountainburg to Joseph and Mary Etta Sanders.
He was raised in Graphic and graduated from Fort Smith High School in 1938. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII as a radio man with the Wildcat Division. After the war, he went to work for the Fort Smith Fire Department, retiring as chief in 1972.
He was a member of the International Association of Fire Chiefs and served as the president of the Southwest Division.
After retiring, he moved to a summer home he built at Snake Creek Landing on Lake Tenkiller in Oklahoma. He was a lifelong member of Southside Baptist Church of Fort Smith.
He enjoyed camping, fishing and boating with his family. He served as president of the Greater Fort Smith Boat Club and was instrumental in organizing its many activities. He repaired and tuned many of the organs and pianos in churches throughout the Fort Smith area. He was an avid sports fan, especially of the St. Louis Cardinals and the Arkansas Razorbacks.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Evelyn Marie Herriman Sanders; two daughters, Judy Jane Resch and Barbara Faye Lawson; and a grandson, Stephen Arthur Resch Sr.
He is survived by two daughters, Margie Weese and her husband James of Fort Smith and Anita Hindmarsh and her husband David of Fort Smith; 15 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
Graveside service was held Monday, April 12, 2010 at the U.S. National Cemetery in Fort Smith.
Pallbearers will be Fort Smith Fire Department Members.
