OBITUARY OF CHARLEY SANDBURG
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
...Charles John Sandburg was born in Gotenborg [sic] Sweden, July 7, 1856 and died at his home, 923 S. Main in Pratt, Feb. 9, 1946, at the advanced age of 89 years, 7 months, and two days.
...He came to the United States at an early age and with his parents settled in Ford Co., Illinois. He united in marriage at Paxton, Illinois, March 4, 1881 to Ellen Augusta Peterson, also of Sweden, and they lived together to celebrate their 63rd wedding anniversary. Mrs. Sandburg passed away Jan. 30, 1945.
...On Feb. 5, 1895 Mr. and Mrs. Sandburg moved with their family to Kansas, settling on a farm 1.25 miles north of Sawyer. In December of the same year they moved to Pratt and have lived in or near this city since that time. Mr. Sandburg was a blacksmith for a number of years, but he spent most ofhis life on the farm. In 1919 he retired from active farm life and moved to Pratt.
...Mr. Sandburg will be remembered by his many friends as being a man who could be trusted to dojust as promised; he was honest and trustworthy and one of his most redeeming features was his willingness to share with those less fortunate. Many a person in need has benefitted by his generosity, tho he sldom allowed his name to be used, as he never asked for praise. He had nine grandsons in the Second World War, and one gave his life for his country in the Pacific theatre.
...Mr. Sandburg leaves to mourn his passing one son, R.O. Sandburg of Pratt; four daughters, Mrs. W.R. McKim and Mrs. Ruth Giles both of Pratt; Mrs. J.W. Staples of Plains and Mrs. R.H. Pride of Sawyer, also one adopted daughter, Mrs. C.H. Wadkins of Pratt; 24 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild, besides two sisters, Mrs. Will Logan and Mrs. John Anderson, both of Elliott, Illinois. One daughter, Pearl, preceeded her father in death in 1911.
...Funeral services were held Tuesday morning, Feb. 12 at 11 o'clock at the Sappington Calbeck Funeral parlors and words of comfort were spoken by Rev. B.F. Henry of the First Presbyterian Church of Pratt.
...Pallbearers were five grandsons and one great grandson: Dorsey and Henry Staples of Plains, Robert Sandburg and Ronald Gene Wadkins of Pratt, Glenn Giles of Osawatomie and Fay Pride of Sawyer.
...Interment was made in Greenlawn Cemetery where he was laid to rest beside his wife of over half a century.
