Marian S. Stuehrenberg-Amundson, 85, Fargo, ND
1921 - 2007

Marian S. Amundson, 85, of Fargo, N.D., and Kent, died peacefully in her sleep Saturday, June 9, 2007, while on a trip with her daughter and son-in-law in Omaha, Neb.

Marian was born Sept. 13, 1921, in a farmhouse outside of Strathcona, Roseau County, the daughter of Jenny and Martin Sandberg. She grew up in Iowa and Missouri before her family settled in Detroit Lakes in 1932.

She graduated from Detroit Lakes High School and completed a two-year teaching certificate at Moorhead State Teachers College in 1941.

She taught in rural Wilkin County, and in Watertown, S.D., before marrying Henry Stuehrenberg in 1944.

Marian offered piano lessons in her home for many years. She returned to teaching elementary school in 1962, with positions in Madison, Battle Lake, Kent, and Breckenridge.

From 1970 to 1982, she served as director of reading at Benjamin Franklin Junior High School in Fargo. She earned a BS and MS in education from Moorhead State College.

Henry Stuehrenberg died in April 1966. In November 1968, she married Erwin (Buck) Amundson, who died in June 1994 after a long illness.

Marian was active in Christ Lutheran Church in Mitchell Township, serving as organist, choir director, and teacher.

Marian had many interests, including travel, genealogy, history, music, word games, and embroidery. She spent much of her time caring for others, especially in later years her parents, her second husband Buck, and her sister Marjorie. Marian weathered disappointments and grief with grace and strength. She selflessly mentored and encouraged and was a loyal friend of many.

Marian is survived by: Her daughter, Sheila Hillberry (Joseph) of Rapid City, S.D.; her two sons, Paul Stuehrenberg (Carole DeVore) of North Haven, Conn., and Daniel Stuehrenberg (Judy) of Canmore of Canada; her son-in-law, David Ness (Judy) of Eden Prairie; grandchildren, Rusty and Jody Hillberry (Christine), Erin, Jenna, and Carly Ness, Eric Ness (Stacy), Paul Outka (Uma), Elizabeth Outka (Trip Pollard), Kevin and Kent Garossino (Nicola); five great-grandchildren, T.J. and Katelynn Hillberry, Katherine and Thomas Pollard and Isaac Outka; her sister, Betty Schram (Bob); and two sisters-in-law, Arda Stuehrenberg and Ruby Sandberg; and several nieces and nephews.
