Maria S. Palacios,90, longtime Grandview resident, our wonderful mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother passed away peacefully on Friday, April 6, 2012 in Sunnyside. Maria was born on August 30, 1921 in Edinburg, Texas to her parents Tiburcio and Petra Castilleja Sanchez. When her mother died unexpectedly in 1933 she took over the responsibility of helping raise her younger brothers and sisters. She was 12-years old at the time and developed a strong caring work ethic that she kept for the rest of her life.

In 1943 she married Eusebio Palacios in Edinburg, Texas. For the next 17 years they lived a semi-nomadic life following agricultural work, mostly cotton harvests in West Texas, Arkansas and in the San Joaquin Valley of California. A typical day for Maria started before dawn preparing breakfast for her entire family, then she would pick 400-500 pounds of cotton throughout the day, even after an exhausting days work she would faithfully return home late in the evening to prepare dinner for her family. They also worked at the Yakima Chief Hop Ranch in Mabton in 1945. Our mother was a very hard working woman. For many years she was a loyal employee of Hogue Ranches in Prosser and eventually as she got older worked as Wayne and Shyla's housekeeper. She also worked for the Lyon's, Milne, Anderson and McWhorter families for many years. She worked until she turned 80-years of age. We do not believe "Lazy" was ever in her DNA. Mom was a very talented cook and also enjoyed working in her yard taking care of her peonies and roses. She was extremely proud of her grandchildren and kept many photo albums of them. One of mom's other hobbies was to go out to dances with Eusebio. She was an active member of The Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Grandview and was a founding member of the Guadalupanas club at the Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband Eusebio; her parents; three brothers, Marcos, Eleno and Luis; four sisters, Rosa Sanchez, Luz Gonzalez, Sara Lopez and Maria Reyes.

She is survived by a son Jesse Palacios (Christina); five daughters, Esther Leep, Dora Tudor (Mark), Gloria de Palacio, Mary Palacios, and Diana Morales (Martin); 17 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Also survived is a brother Jose Sanchez (Amalia) and sister Irene Lopez from Othello.

The entire family of Maria would like to express their sincerest thanks and appreciation to the entire staff at Hillcrest Manor where she lived the final 18 months of her life.

Visitation will be held on Monday, April 9, 2012 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a Recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7:00 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home in Grandview. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at The Blessed Sacrament Church in Grandview on Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at 1 p.m. with burial at the Grandview Cemetery.
