Elena was preceded in death by her parents, Natividad and Felipita García-Griego, her first husband, Jacobo Romero, her second husband, Salomon Sánchez, a son, Melecio Sánchez, three brothers, Benito Griego, Seferino Griego and Carlos Griego, five sisters, Luisa Olguín and her husband, Joe, Rosa Martínez and her husband, Delfino, Frances Martínez and her husband, Augustine, Aurora Herrera and her husband, George, Deluvina Montoya-Johnson and Julia Johnson and a great-grandaughter, Jacqueline LeDoux.
Elena is survived by two daughters, Marcella LeDoux and her husband, Ernest of Las Vegas, NM and Mercedes Sánchez-Madrid and her husband, Greg of Rio Rancho, NM, a brother, Donicio Griego of Pueblo, CO, four granddaughters, Joyce LeDoux, Beatrice LeDoux and her fiancé, Shawn of Las Vegas, NM, Lorrie LeDoux-Leyba and her husband, Johnny of Canjilon, NM, EnRica Madrid and her friend, Mario Quintana of Rio Rancho, NM and Marina Sánchez and her fiancé, John Paul of Santa Fé, NM, two grandsons, Marcus Madrid and his companion, Vanessa Martínez of Rio Rancho, NM and Melecio Sánchez Jr.and his fiancée, Gabriella of Santa Fé, NM, one great-grandaughter, Eliza Jane Gibson and her husband, Gerald, three great-grandsons, Jonathan Bustamante and his wife, Isaya, Christopher Sánchez Valencia, and Salomon and Carlos Rey Madrid, one great-great-grandson, Ace Gibson, one daughter-in-law, Bernadette Sánchez-Lloyd and her husband, James, three sisters-in-law, Lydia Griego, Theresa Griego and Margaret Griego and special cousins, Erlinda Quintana and her husband, John and Lala Sandoval and by many nieces and nephews.
Elena was born in Las Vegas, New Mexico on August 12, 1923.
After receiving her early education and LPN degree, she worked as an LPN at the old Las Vegas Hospital, St. Anthony’s Hospital, the Las Vegas clinic with Dr. Evans and Dr. Blanchard.
Elena was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Woodmen of the World Association, and loved sewing and taking care of her grandchildren.
Services will be held from the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on Thursday, July 9, 2015 with a rosary at 9:00 a.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Father C. John Brasher will celebrate the Mass. The interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery with the following relatives serving as casket bearers, Johnny Leyba, Jonathan Bustamante, Marcus Madrid, Melecio Sánchez, John Paul Valencia and Shawn Fahey. Honorary bearers will be Gerald Gibson, Izaya Sánchez-Valencia, Christopher Sánchez-Valencia, Salomon Madrid, Carlos Ray Madrid and Ace Anthony Gibson.
Memorials in her memory will be sent to the Nursing Program, Luna Community College, 366 Luna Drive, Las Vegas, NM 87701.
