Eloy Salazar, a lifelong cattle rancher who raised six children with his wife of nearly 49 years, died Saturday morning, Jan. 17, 2009. He was 74.
Eloy died surrounded by his family at University of New Mexico Hospital following a battle with cancer.
Born on Aug. 16, 1934, to Josefita Romero and Daniel Salazar at their family ranch near Maes, N.M., Eloy was the second oldest of 10 children. Two of his siblings, Senaida Eufelia Salazar and Daniel Salazar, died in childhood.
A lifelong Catholic and longtime resident of Los Vigiles, Eloy married Aurelia Romero at the Immaculate Conception Church in Las Vegas, N.M., on Jan. 30, 1960. They had six children.
Though he left school to help his family at a young age, Eloy was a staunch believer in education and was the driving force behind all of his children graduating from college. He loved spending time with his family and tending to his cattle and horses. He was a hardworking man who fought illness for years to be with his family.
Eloy worked at the Montezuma Seminary and the State Hospital before his kidneys failed. Thanks to his sister, Ruby Clark, he received a kidney transplant at UNM Hospital in 1982. He was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma in May 2008.
Eloy is survived by his wife, Aurelia, of Los Vigiles, and children: MaryAnn Lucero and husband, Richard, of Santa Fe; Yolanda Salazar of Albuquerque; Lorraine Salazar-Bustos and husband, Joseph, of Mesa, Ariz.; Priscilla Elizabeth Salazar, of Las Vegas, N.M.; Anthony Salazar and wife, Soraya, of Albuquerque; and Martin Salazar of Las Vegas, N.M. He has one granddaughter, Micaela Lucero, of Santa Fe.
Other survivors include brothers: Mike Salazar and Gloria; Joaquin Salazar and Rose; Max Salazar and Velma; and Daniel Salazar and Bernadette, all of Las Vegas, N.M.; and sister Ruby Clark and Vernon, of Rio Rancho.
He is also survived by sisters-in-law Margarita Romero, Elvira Aragon and Ersilia Salazar, all of Las Vegas, N.M.; uncles and aunts Ruben Salazar of Las Vegas, N.M., Escolastica "Clorinda" Aragon of Colorado, Tobias Romero of Texas, Christian Romero and Flaminia of Albuquerque, and Gene Romero and Manuelita of Texas; and many nephews, nieces and cousins.
Eloy is preceded in death by his parents and brothers Levi Salazar and Ernest Salazar, sister-in-law Mary Salazar and brother-in-law Arquilino Aragon; niece Lucille Salazar and nephew Modesto Salazar.
Visitation will be held Monday and Tuesday at Rogers Mortuary.
A rosary will be recited Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church. The mass of Christian burial is scheduled for 9 a.m. Wednesday, also at Immaculate Conception, with the Rev. George Salazar as celebrant. Burial will follow at the Los Vigiles Cemetery with the following serving as casket bearers: Leonard Salazar, George Aragon, Danny Salazar, Vern Clark, Arquilino Aragon and Mike Salazar. Arrangements are under the direction of Rogers Mortuary, 1-800-479-3511.
