Mary Theresa Sakalas, 79, of Wilkes-Barre, has fallen asleep in the Lord on Saturday, February 28, 2009, in the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. She was born November 10, 1929, in the Brookside section of Wilkes-Barre. Her parents were the late Julian and Anastasia Polanczas Luzack. She attended Coughlin High School. She was formerly employed as an associate at Sears Department Store and as a cashier of Acme Market, Wilkes-Barre. She was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother, who was blessed with a respected family. She was a faithful member of Holy Assumption of St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church, North Main Street, Wilkes-Barre. She also was a member of St. Nicholas Apostolic Society, Wilkes-Barre, and the Senior Citizens Club, Plains. She was preceded in death by her husband, her brother and her sisters. Surviving are her children, her daughter and caregiver, Michelle Sakalas, at home; her sons, Ronald and his wife, Michelle, and Richard and his wife, Lori; her grandchildren, Christina, Nathan, Brian, Stephanie and Gabrielle. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 4, 2009, at 9:30 a.m. with a Panikhida Service at the Simon S. Russin Funeral Home, 136 Maffett St., Plains, followed at 10 a.m. with the Office of Christian Burial at Holy Assumption of St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church, North Main Street, Wilkes-Barre, with Very Rev. James G. Hayer, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Wyoming. Family and friends may call Tuesday, from 4 to 7 p.m. A Parastas Service will be held at 6 p.m. The family requests that flowers be admitted and memorial gifts be made to the S.P.C.A.
