SHREVEPORT, LA - Sharman Ann Sachs Burgess, 59, a resident of Shreveport, LA passed away Wednesday August 18, 2010, in Canton, GA, where she had resided for the past year, after a courageous battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's Disease).
She was a devoted wife, mother, sister, daughter, friend, and teacher. Sharman spent her free time shopping, sewing, gardening, and caring for her five cats. But most of all she enjoyed helping others. She embraced life to the fullest and taught others to do the same. Her ongoing passion for teaching extended beyond her 36 years in the classroom into lessons that would touch lives forever. Not only did she play an important role in her students' education, but she was continuously rewarded with the lessons they taught her. Her professional teaching career included educating fourth, sixth, and seventh graders in the fields of science and language arts. She also played a pivotal role in the Gateway gifted program. She earned numerous awards for her contribution to education, including 2007 Educator of the Year, 2007-2008 Caddo Parish Middle School Teacher of the Year, 2008 Regional Teacher of the Year, and she was a finalist of the 2008 Louisiana Middle School Teacher of the Year award. She was one of the lucky few who found her true calling in life and encouraged others to follow their passions.
Sharman graduated from Fairpark High School in 1968, received her Bachelors in Education from Northeast Louisiana University, Monroe, LA in 1971, and her Masters in Education from the University of Central Arkansas, Conroe, AR in 1980.
Predeceasing her was her mother, Bettie G. Williams. Survivors include her husband of 29 years, Kenneth G. Burgess, Jr.; daughter, Lauren and Will Kallbreier of Canton, GA; daughter, Dr. Brandy L.
