James R. Surfus, 70, of 2507 Wollmer Street, Manitowoc, died Thursday, May 11, 2006, at his residence. James was born Jan. 24, 1936, in Manitowoc, son of the late Kenneth and Lila Kaminski Surfus. He attended school in Manitowoc and graduated from Lincoln High School with the class of 1953. He married the former Merle Brandel on Feb. 19, 1955, in Manitowoc. James was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish and of IBEW Local #158. Survivors include his wife Merle, Manitowoc; his children, Christi Surfus, Cedarburg; Vicki and Jeff Raymond, Stoughton; Tom Surfus, Manitowoc; Josette and James Moore, Green Bay; Peggy and Brian Vater, Plymouth; Jamie and Jeff Lewiston, New Berlin; Tami Surfus and special friend Dan Gracyalny, both of De Pere; Mike and Karen Surfus, Brown Deer; Nancy Surfus, Milwaukee; Jon and Jill Surfus, Pleasant Prairie; 15 grandchildren, Elizabeth Surfus, Kevin Rezachek, Jessica (fiance Todd Schuette) Schuh, Megan Moore, Tyler Reza-chek, Julianne Bodinger, Justin Surfus, Gabrielle DeHart, Katelyn Rezachek, Kellen Moore, Kimberly Surfus, Alex Bodinger, Samantha Lewiston, Natalie Surfus, Jordan Gracyalny; one brother and sister-in-law: William and Ellen Surfus, Manitowoc; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Kathryn and Terence Kilroy, Manitowoc; Joanne and Clarence Suchy, Wichita, KS; one sister-in-law and two brothers-in-law, Mary Anne and Philip Baranowski, Green Lake; Thomas J. Brandel, Manitowoc; one aunt, Ruth Smith, Manitowoc; one uncle, Mark Surfus, Manitowoc. Nieces, nephews, godchildren, other relatives and friends also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister-in-law. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 16, 2006, at St. Francis of Assisi-Marshall Site with the Rev. Dave Hoffman will officiate. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. Friends may call on Tuesday, May 16, 2006, from 9 a.m. until the time of Mass at 11 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi-Marshall Site, 1114 South 21st Street, Manitowoc. Memorials may be made to St. Francis of Assisi Parish or St. Vincent de Paul. The Reinbold & Pfeffer Family Funeral Home, Manitowoc is assisting the Surfus family. The family would like to thank Dr. Barylak and all "the girls" for their special care of James.
