Der Nord Westen, 03 Dec. 1903: "Death Tues., after a long illness, of 76-yr. old CARL SPIERING. The deceased came here several years ago from Hillsboro, So. Dakota, but has lived a secluded life since his illness. He was a veteran of the Civil War and a member of the local post of the G.A.R. He leaves a widow and 4 children. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon from the Lutheran Church."
