Born in Rolling Fork, Washington Co., Kentucky, he was educated in local schools, at St. Thomas Seminary in Bardstown Kentucky, and in Rome. Ordained August 13, 1834, in Rome, for the Diocese of Bardstown. Engaged in pastoral work, then served as president of both St. Thomas and St Joseph College in Bardstown, thru 1840. Vicar General of the Diocese 1844 to 1848. Consecrated Auxiliary Bishop of Louisville, Sept. 10, 1848. Attended the First Plenary Council of Baltimore in 1852. Promoted Archbishop of Baltimore, April 3, 1864. Presided over the Second Plenary Council of Baltimore in 1866. Attended the First Vatican Council, 1869-1870.
