Mrs. Annie Catherine (Rutledge) Rochleau
Annie Catherine (Rutledge) Rochleau, 104, was born April 19, 1904 at Wellfleet, Nebraska, the daughter of Charles and Mary (Welch) Rutledge in a sod home. The family later moved to Iowa and settled on a farm southwest of Algona.
Annie grew into a beautiful young woman as she continued to help her family at home.
Annie was married to Clarence Alexander Rochleau on December 25, 1923 at her parents' home. Following their marriage, the couple lived on a farm with Clarence's parents, which was just a short distance from Annie's home.
Annie was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Algona, where she was Baptized and Confirmed on January 9, 1944 by Rev. L.H. Loesch.
Annie's greatest love was for her family. She was always available to "watch over" any of her "clutch". She loved playing cards with her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Annie also loved gardening, canning fruits and vegetables, quilting and babysitting for many of the children in the community. Her coffee pot was always on for whoever would stop to visit. Her quilting abilities were outstanding. She created quilts for her six children and her grandchildren when they were united in marriage. Annie also sewed baby quilts for her great grandchildren. She continued to quilt up until the time she moved from her home.
Annie passed away on Monday, January 19, 2009 at the age of 104.
She is survived by one daughter, Mary Lee Rochleau, and one daughter-in-law, Gloria (Eugene) Rochleau, both of Algona. Also surviving are many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Annie was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Mary; sister Ethel Spurgeon; brothers, Loren, Vern, Elmer, Orlan, Kenneth and an infant brother Charles; her husband, Clarence on April 6, 1972, her daughters, Bernice Pergande, Bernadine Lighter, Janice Price and sons Eugene and Robert and several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
Annie touched many lives throughout her time with us. She will be greatly missed.
