Barbara L. Rutan, 53, of Columbus, died at 2:35 a.m. Wednesday, December 2, 2009, at Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility.
Barbara was a 1974 graduate of Columbus East High School, received the degree of Bachelor of Arts from Franklin College in 1978 and the degree of Master of Science in Physical Education from Indiana University in 1981.
A sports enthusiast, Barbara formerly served as an athletic trainer at Columbus East High School. She was a retired Gunnery Sergeant with the U.S. Marine Corps, being honorably discharged June 30, 2005, after 20 years of service.
After retirement from the Marine Corps, she held civilian positions at Camp Atterbury.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Columbus, Phi Beta Psi Sorority and the Marine Corps League.
The funeral will be conducted at noon Monday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with the Rev. Brian Campbell officiating. Calling will be from 10 a.m. until service time Monday. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery. Full military rites will be conducted by the U.S. Marine Corps Honor Guard and Bartholomew County Veterans Color Guard.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of South Central Indiana.
Born in Columbus January 16, 1956, she was the daughter of Ralph E. and Clarice V. "Vickie" Shirley Rutan.
Survivors include her mother, Vickie Rutan of Columbus; a son, Jason Alicea of Jeffersonville; brothers, Robert Rutan of California and Ted Rutan of Columbus; and a niece, Allison Rutan of Charleston, W.V.
She was preceded in death by her father.
