Obituary

Mary Lou (Rust) Bode, age 81, passed into eternal peace on Saturday, September 13, 2014 surrounded by family and loved ones in Huffman, Texas.

Mary Lou Bode was born in New Braunfels, Texas to Alvin and Lucile Rust where she grew up and graduated as part of the New Braunfels Class of 1951. Mary Lou obtained her teaching certificate from Southwest Texas State Teaching College in San Marcos, Texas. She taught school at Lone Star Elementary School in New Braunfels, Texas before marrying Gilbert A. Bode, of New Braunfels, and transferring to Columbus, Georgia while Gilbert served in the US Airforce at Ft. Bragg.

Upon discharge from the Airforce, the couple returned to New Braunfels, where Mary Lou once again embarked in education at the local Catholic School. Mary Lou and Gilbert began their own family in 1956 with the birth of their son, Andrew Keith Bode, followed by Kathleen Denise in 1959, Gary Michael in 1962 and David Frederick in 1964.

With four children of her own and a husband to look after, Mary Lou temporarily left her education career to be a full time homemaker for the family. They moved from New Braunfels, Texas to Huffman, Texas in 1965 when GIlbert's job took him and the family to the Houston area. Once the children were in old enough to attend public school, she returned to the local school district not only as an active parent but as a school clerk and registrar. She also undertook various roles during this time as an active Scout leader for both the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. She stayed involved in the local school district until 1985 when she left the school district to once again enjoy her family and retirement with her husband Gilbert.

In addition to her so generously touching the lives of so many young people over the years, Mary Lou was also active in her local church communities. She and Gilbert were original founding members of Lake Houston United Methodist Church in Huffman, and early members of the formation of Atascocita United Methodist Church. She was an active Sunday School teacher, choir member and active in many additional fellowships of the church.
Mary Lou kept busy with a number of hobbies. One of these was baking a number of delicious German pastries she learned from her father and aunt. She was an avid gardener and generally produced lush and lavish crops that she not only shared with family but friends. There was always an "extra plate" at Mary Lou's table for that unexpected individual who showed up during family dinners.

Mary Lou continued to enjoy her role as loving wife, mother and grandmother over the years and truly enjoyed the time she was able to spend watching her family grow and develop over the years. She loved spending time with all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved animals - Dogs, Cats, Birds, Squirrels and Hummingbirds.

Mary Lou is survived by her husband of 60 years, Gilbert Bode; Son Andrew and wife Denise of Victoria, Texas; Kathleen Hennis and husband Robert of Wallisville, Texas; son Gary and wife Jackie of Flower Mound, Texas; and son David and wife Tammy of Cypress, Texas. Mary Lou also is survived by 7 grand children, 3 step grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren. She is survived by her sister, Betty Behegan of Villa Park, IL.

She was pre-dated in death by her parents Alvin and Lucile Rust and Sister, Patricia Bees (and parents-in-law Benno Robert Bode and Alwine Kuhn Bode). She has a number of other Aunts, Uncles, Nieces, Nephews and Cousins.
