WELLINGTON - Baker, Tommie Sue, 81, formerly of Wellington, passed away Friday, Feb. 15, 2008 at her home in Van Buren, Ark.
Tommie Sue Baker was born on March 12, 1926 in Yellville, Ark., to Thomas V. Russell and Chloe Ruth (Doshier) Russell. She graduated from Tahlequah High School in Tahlequah, Okla. and received her college degree from Northeastern Oklahoma State University in Tahlequah. On Aug. 24, 1949, she married Robert L. Baker, Jr. and taught 2nd grade while he attended dental school. In 1964, they moved to Kiowa, Kan., where she was active in many community organizations and worked in her husbands dental office as office manager and dental assistant. She was also an active member of the First United Methodist Church. Bob and Tommie lived in Kiowa for 30 years. Following his retirement they moved to Wellington, Kan., where they spent the next 10 years. She enjoyed gardening, working puzzles, reading, playing the piano and had a passion for golf. Following her husbands death, Tommie moved to Van Buren, Ark., where she lived until the time of her death. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Dr. R.L. Baker, Jr.
She is survived by two sons, Dr. Bob Baker and wife, Julie of Van Buren, Ark., Dr. Joe Baker and wife, Linda of Wellington; granddaughters, Amy Huster and husband, Billy of Newkirk, Okla., Leigh Michele Sands and husband, Robert of Lawrence, Kan.; grandson, Brett Baker of Lawrence, Kan.; brother, Dr. David Russell and wife, Elenore of Pittsburg, Kan., along with their three children of Chicago, IL and three grandchildren.
Service 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2008 at the First United Methodist Church, Wellington, Kan. Reverend Brent Clayton and Pastor Danny Ginn will officiate. Interment will follow at the Sumner Memorial Gardens. Visitation 1 to 9 p.m. today at Frank Funeral Home, Wellington, Kan. Memorials have been established with the Wellington Public Library and the Wellington After School Program. Contributions can be left or mailed to the funeral home. Frank Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
