Opal L. Arnold
Oct. 4, 1923-March 7, 2010

Mrs. Opal L. Arnold, 86, Michigan City, passed away Sunday, March 7, 2010, at Golden Living-Fountainview Terrace, La Porte, iN.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church, 11th and Cedar streets, Michigan City, with the Rev. William Ledgerwood officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Carlisle Funeral Home and from 10 a.m. until the time of service Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Opal was born Oct. 4, 1923, in Michigan City to Robert M. and Nancy (Riegle) Russell. On Sept. 21, 1940, she married Clifford Arnold at First Christian Church. He died Feb. 2, 1996.

Surviving is her son, State Sen. Jim (Lauren) Arnold, La Porte; grandchildren Jackie (Tom) Dermody, Jami (Ron) Francis, Janel (Nick) Zarantonello, Jim (Jessica) Arnold, Jeff (Kim) Sitar, Julie (Dwayne) Tate, and Jim (Katie) Sitar; and 11 great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a brother, Robert (Elaine) Russell.

She was preceded in death by her son Jack Arnold in 1959; brothers Charles Russell and James Russell; and sisters Dorothy Kriesel, Helen Bendix, Lillian Fernandez and Margie Fishbeck.

She was a member of First Christian Church, and she volunteered at Meals on Wheels, Barker Mansion, St. Anthony Memorial as a "pink lady" and as a greeter at the Medical Group. She was very engaged in local politics as a member of the Michigan City Women's Democratic Club, and was extremely active in her husband Cliff Arnold's political career. She also worked in sales at Lasko Furs and formerly was with Arno Tape.

She loved her special dog, Speedy.
